Guard Your Heart
Proverbs 4:23 NIV
”Above all else, guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it.”
This may seem like a weird Valentine’s Day post, but this is what God has been talking to me about and I want to share what I have been learning. When I first read this scripture at the beginning of the month, I mostly scanned over it because it’s familiar. I have read it many times. This time as I scanned and went to move on, Holy Spirit stopped my inattention by saying quietly to my spirit, “Daughter, are you really guarding your heart?”
So, I ask you the same question: Are you really guarding your heart?
If you are like me, you initial reaction will be, “of course I am, I read the Bible, I pray, and I put on my breastplate of righteousness every day. My heart is fully guarded!”
Read the second part of the scripture: “everything you do flows from it.” Consider your behaviour over the last month…has it glorified God?
Yes, I can see you squirming, trust me, I am squirming too. The Holy Spirit revealed just how unguarded my heart actually was. I am not fully there yet, but I am working on it. It seemed overwhelming at first, so I will suggest that you get a journal and write down the motives you have for doing the things that you are doing. I mean everything you are doing…yes, that includes the hours your spend scrolling through your social media accounts and posting and playing and debating and … wasting time!
Check your heart for selfishness, bitterness, resentment, hatred, impatience, anger, rage, jealousy … you finish your list. Now line that up with the Fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5. How do you measure up? I didn’t do as well as I thought I would and literally am still going through repentance and renouncing those things that caused the mess I found and I am asking Jesus to take out the bitter roots, the anger and rage, the bitterness and selfishness and to replace it with the His Fruit of the Spirit.
Now look at where you are spending your time, including how many hours of useless scrolling on social media, hours watching TV or streaming videos or _____ (fill in the blank). Ask God to show you where you have not guarded your heart by not guarding your eye and ear gates. Those are the entry points for all sorts of images and sounds we should not be allowing in. It poisons our hearts and strips us of the fruit of the Spirit.
So, this Valentine’s Day, I challenge you to remember your first Love, Jesus Christ and to bring yourself back into right relationship with Him. Ask Holy Spirit to show you what changes He wants you to make and then obey, regardless of how difficult it may seem. It is for your own good and for His glory.
Remember my Sisters, we are to be in this world, but not of this world. (Romans 12:2). We are not citizens of earth, but we are simply on a journey here passing through. (Philippians 3:20-21).
Heaven is our Home!
